An Open Letter to the President from a Confessing Evangelical

Dear Mr. President,

I am the pastor of Christ is King Baptist Church in Syracuse, NY.

In the Bible there is the story of a ruler who was immoral. He ruled as a potentate for the Roman Empire and ignored the Law of God. He was oppressive as well as immoral, and unjust because he thought he could govern without the only standard of truth we have; the Word of God.

God raised up a prophet to confront him. His name was John the Baptist. Herod Antipas had an affair with his brother’s wife. John the Baptist, who was used of God to announce the arrival of Jesus the Messiah, confronted Herod. He said, It is not lawful for thee to have her (Matthew 14:4). Of course, he was referring to the Ten Commandments. The 7th Commandment specifically says, Thou shalt not commit adultery.

Your record with women is well attested, even in your own book, The Art of the Deal where you bragged about the married women you have slept with. In spite of this admission, when you were interviewed during the campaign you said pointedly that you did not need to ask God forgiveness for anything. Obviously, that statement was not only prideful (since the Bible says, All have sinned in Romans 3:23), but it was a lie, and all liars will have their part in the Lake of Fire (Revelation 21:8).

Now it has been discovered that your lawyer paid a porn star to cover up an affair when your son was just a baby. I am writing to remind you of the same truth that John the Baptist spoke to Herod Antipas: It is not lawful for you to have her. It is also not lawful for you to lie about it, since that breaks the 9th Commandment (Exodus 20:17). In short, you are in big trouble with God.

I am aware that you have spiritual advisors who are evangelical. If they have not told you these same things, they are all bad advisors and perhaps even false teachers. Teachers who will tickle your ears are plentiful when it comes to the office of president. I am not here to tickle your ears. I am here to tell you the truth. The one who loves you is the one who tells you the most truth.

So here is the truth, pure and unvarnished. You have sinned against God and if you continue in your sin you will stand before Him on the Day of Judgment and give an account. You must repent of your sin and trust Jesus Christ for your salvation. He died for sinners like you and me. He conquered death.

As our leader, the only way you can lead our nation in the area it needs leadership the most’repentance–is to publicly repent of your sins against God. Acknowledge this sinful relationship with Stormy Daniels publicly, and any others. Make restitution where you need to. Cry out to God for mercy. Tell the nation you are looking to the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation and forgiveness of sin. Humble yourself in the eyes of the Lord and He shall lift you up (James 4:10).

In so doing, you will show your evangelical base that you are serious about Christianity and not just using it occasionally for political purposes. Repentance is a gift from God (2 Timothy 2:23-24). My prayer for you is that He would give you the gift of true repentance and faith in Jesus. Before it is too late for you and for our country.

In Christ,

Pastor Jon Speed
